Not very far from Bangkok is one of the most well known museums in Thailand Erawan Museum. This museum is located in Samut Prakan. Erawan museum is well known for its architecture which is in the shape of a giant three headed elephant. The elephant's massive body, which is built out of pure bronze, is set on the top of a huge round base painted in pink.
Inside the museum which bears invaluable reminders of Thailand's ancient heritage. Its interior is lavishly adorned with elegant decorative pieces of contemporary art. This three headed elephant architecture idea and imagination was contributed by Khun Lek Viriyaphant. It was his vision to preserve his collections and antiquities as a means of contribution to Thai heritage. Many of the priceless objects of art were held as sacred objects for people of ancient cultures. These were believed to bring blessings and prosperity to the land. The museum is lavishly decorated into three floors to symbolize the universe and it was designed in accordance with the three-tiered cosmology of Tribhumi which is an important concept of the Hindu-Buddhist religion. The three storeys inside the elephant contain antiquities and collection of religious objects by the owner of the museum. There are displays of Buddha images through different periods and hand painted walls.
The grand Erawan statue has come to serve as an important sacred object honoring God Indra or the ‘Elephant God’.
